Online Digital Publishers

Traditional Music Publishers (includes publishers with digital music available)
Many companies publish printed music. The largest publishers/ distributors are probably

  • Hal Leonard -- which publishes a great deal of popular single title sheets, guitar tab books, collections (PVG -- piano, vocal, guitar), Schirmer editions, and some method books.
  • Alfred, which recently purchased Warner Brothers -- which publishes a great deal of piano and other method books. They recent purchase of Warner Brothers adds the popular single title sheets, guitar tab, collections, Kalmus, and a wide variety of music to their collection.
  • Music Sales -- which seems to have an unusual collections of presses for which they distribute music.
  • Mel Bay -- which publishes music for guitar and usually instruments. Mel Bay does get into other areas as well but is probably most famous for instruments other than piano.

So, what's the difference between the Classical Editions/ Publishers?

Henle publications have covers like this

:

Schirmer Editions have covers that look like this:

C. F. Peter Editions have covers that look like this
:

Kalmus Editions have covers that look like this
:

Minus One covers look something like this:

Linking Info (LI) comment: Henle publications are very high-quality Urtext (original text) editions. Expensive.
LI comment: Schirmer Editions tend to be the least expensive. Some teachers don't mind these editions; some hate them. Hal Leonard distributes these editions
LI Comment. Good quality. Tends to have editors people request.
LI Comment: Kalmus Editions are inexpensive editions. OK quality. Warner Brothers distributes these editions.
LI comment. Minus One recordings have been around since I was a kid. Good to play with when you are working on a piece. Minus One refers to the recording -- it has all the parts minus one -- the solo part.
Dover scores look something like this:

Online Digital Publishers
Online digital publishers, such as musicnotes.com or SheetMusic Direct (for Hal Leonard publications), have some advantages over traditional print music stores and web sites because they

  • offer a way to get music immediately (if you have a credit card or other way of purchasing music over the internet)
  • offer software that allows you to transpose music instantly without having to purchase expensive music scanners and other composition software. (This is helpful, for example, if you are a singer who wants to sing a song that is not originally written in a key that is friendly to your voice. By using a digital publisher, you can specify the key in which you'd like the song transposed.)
  • may offer (as in the case of musicnotes) some music you may not be able to get anywhere else
  • may offer (as in the case of musicnotes) some features and software (such as Guitar Tutor) that you may not be able to get anywhere else

The disadvantages online music publishers have include

  • many times you only have one shot at printing the music. This means you need to be very careful ensuring the music is the song you wanted and that it is in the desired key the first time you order the music.
  • the quality of the output depends on the quality of your printer.
  • cover art is not usually included
  • the price may be a little higher for the added convenience of transposition and instant availability
  • not every piece of music is offered this way
  • some sites (like SheetMusicDirect) only offer music from one publisher
  • customer support may not be as immediate or ask helpful as you wish
