Let
Me Hear Your Voice
by Catherine Maurice
Highly recommended to me by one of my student's
parents.
Let Me Hear Your Voice is
the story of how one mother, working with many teachers and caregivers
-- and against the "conventional" notion that autism is
not curable, coached her son out of autism. Just when the reader
becomes relieved that Maurice's son is no longer showing signs of
autism, Maurice notices something is wrong with her daughter. The
author details her story of a family with two autism children found
a way to bring her children back. The bravery, consistency, love,
and patience of this family, especially the mother, is a great lesson
for all of us.
As a music teacher, I was interested in the teaching
methods used to reach autistic children.

Thinking
in Pictures and other Reports from My Life with Autism
by Temple Grandin with a forward by Oliver Sacks
This was the first book I read about autism. I found the way the
author describes autism very interesting. It helped me think of
ways to try to teach one of my autistic children. I must say that
I still have trouble handling Grandin's job (a designer of livestock-handling
facilities) but you can sense how much she really cares for animals.

I haven't read this book but I plan to. |

The
Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
a novel by Mark Haddon
A murder mystery with an autistic child as the detective who solves
the mystery. Another interesting look at how the mind of an autistic
person might work. |
