The Sociopath Next Door by
Martha Stout, PhD.
|
According
to Martha Stout, PhD., about 1 in 25 Americans has no conscience.
This book explains what we know about sociopaths and gives us a few
tips on how to identify and stay away from these folks who will do
anything to win their prize of choice -- drugs, power, sex, thrills.
When a person exhibits three or more characteristic listed below,
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV,
the "Bible" of the American Psychiatric Association
considers that the person has "antisocial personality disorder."
The characteristic include "failure to conform to societies norms,
deceitfulness, manipulativesness; Impulsivity, failure to plan ahead;
irritability, aggressiveness; reckless disregard for the safety of
self or others; consistent irresponsibility; lack of remorse after
having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another person." If you
have ever been puzzled, amazed, or confused about folks who seem to
be able to do anything to get their way, read this book! |

Undoing Depression: What Therapy Doesn't Teach
You and Medication Can't Give You by Richard O'Conner, PhD.
|
A very readable
book about depression. The book is divided into four sections: What
We Know About Depression, Learning New Skills, Putting the Skills
to Work, and A New Synthesis. The author, who is also a "despressive"
(the author's word choice for a person who has/is depressed), explains
depression from many points of view. What I liked about the book is
he identifies the complex causes for depression and provides suggestions
to live with it. |
Undoing Stress: The Missing Connection Between
Depression, Anxiety and 21st Century Illness by Richard
O'Conner, PhD.
|
I haven't read this yet because I'm counting
my pennies but, especially after reading Undoing Depression,
I plan to read this one also. |
